POKOTABI / Tōji Udon
東寺うどん
Located just outside the east gate of Tōji Temple, Tōji Udon serves comforting bowls topped with beef, shrimp tempura, and sweet fried tofu, alongside hearty sets with seasoned rice and rich curry udon.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Right by the east gate of Tōji Temple, directly in front of the bus stop, Tōji Udon centers its menu around its namesake bowl, the Toji. The dish brings together simmered beef, a generous shrimp tempura, and deep-fried tofu that soaks up the broth, all served over slender noodles in a gentle, lightly sweetened dashi characteristic of Kyoto. As the tempura batter softens into the broth and the fried tofu yields its seasoned juices, the combination makes for a thoroughly satisfying meal.
For a more substantial lunch, the Kobo-san Set pairs the shop's signature noodles with kayaku gohan, a bowl of seasoned steamed rice. Alternating between the dashi-infused rice and the sweet, savory noodle broth brings out the deeper flavors of both, offering just the right sustenance before or after touring the temple grounds. Diners can order the noodles hot or chilled, making it an easy choice in any weather.
The broader menu spans single-order udon and soba selections, including thick, clingy curry udon, nabeyaki hot-pot noodles loaded with shiitake mushrooms, fish cake, and egg, as well as lighter toppings such as simmered herring or grated yam. With counter seats alongside standard tables, the shop easily accommodates solo visitors dropping in for an unpretentious, comforting meal between sightseeing stops.
